Probation violation occurs when a person fails to adhere to the terms and/or conditions of his/her probation. When a person fails to comply with the terms and/or conditions of his/her probation, he/she may be punished with the maximum sentence for the crime for which he/she was placed on probation. After a person is placed on probation, he/she is allowed to return to his/her home environment instead of jail or prison. In order for a person to successfully complete the conditions/terms of his/her probation, he/she must strictly follow the conditions/terms that were ordered by the court at the time of sentencing. Once a person has been placed on probation, he/she may have to report to a probation officer on a regular basis, or complete community service activities. If a person fails to complete the conditions/terms of his/her probation, then he/she can be charged with a Violation of Probation (VOP).
